Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday. That gives most workers a three-day weekend, Fri, Dec 25 through Sun, Dec 27. New Year's Day 2027 is also a Friday, so the two holidays sit exactly one week apart. Christmas Eve, Thu, Dec 24, 2026, is a regular federal workday.
Why does the observed date matter?
Christmas is one of the 11 federal holidays named in 5 U.S.C. 6103. When December 25 lands on a weekend, OPM moves the day off for federal staff: Saturday to the Friday before, Sunday to the Monday after. Banks do not copy that rule. The Federal Reserve's schedule says its banks stay open on the Friday before a Saturday holiday.
That split matters in 2027. Christmas 2027 is a Saturday, so federal offices close on Fri, Dec 24, 2027, while Federal Reserve Banks open that day. If you are counting toward a payment, a filing or a delivery, check which calendar the other side uses. The year table above lists both the calendar date and the observed date.
How many working days are left before Christmas?
The business-day figure skips Saturdays, Sundays and every federal holiday between today and December 25. In the run-up to Christmas 2026 that means Veterans Day (Wed, Nov 11) and Thanksgiving (Thu, Nov 26) drop out, if they are still ahead of you. Black Friday, Fri, Nov 27, is not a federal holiday, so the count keeps it.
